Along with the deaths of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade have come alarming statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Suicide rates in the US have climbed 30 percent since 1999. We will discuss this crisis with the Chair of Old Dominion University's Psychology Department, Dr. Michelle Kelley, as well as Dr. Matt Judah, an assistant professor at the university. After that we will talk to Dr April Lightsey at Watermark Psychological Services, a psychologist who specializes in treating anxiety, depression, and people trying to cope with suicidal thoughts. We will discuss politics and policy with Vangie Williams and John Suddarth, candidates facing each other in next week's Democratic primary in Virginia's 1st congressional district. Williams works for a government contractor and helps her husband care for their six daughters. Suddarth is an army veteran. We will ask them about their plans for the general election, the challenges facing America today, and what they hope to do in congress. And later, we'll check in with Mal Vincent to find out what's going on this week in Mal's World.

Republicans in Virginia's Fourth Congressional District will decide between Shion Fenty and Ryan McAdams in next Tuesday’s primary election. Fenty is a fashion designer and administrative assistant whose mother immigrated to America from Guyana. McAdams is a minister from Williamsburg who went to VMI on a baseball scholarship. We will talk to both candidates about the issues facing Virginia, and how they plan to win in November.
